Club President and Bedians legend Barrie Carroll was recently honoured at the Manchester Sports Awards, winning the 'Unsung Hero' award

Barrie, who joined the club in 1957, just a couple of years after its formation has not only represented Bedians on the pitch, but also off it over the past 56 years. His various capacities have included stints as chairman, groundsman, and committee member, and earlier this year was voted in as the club's new President.

Barrie received his award from taekwondo Olympic gold medallist Jade Jones at the Manchester Sports Awards, held at Wythenshawe Forum, which topped off a memorable night for Barrie and a small group of friends, family and Bedians.

Other guests at the ceremony, which celebrated the achievements of sports clubs, coaches, athletes, schools and volunteers in the region in what has been a memorable year, included Team GB Olympic basketball women’s captain Julie Page, and Salford City Reds rugby league player Jodie Broughton – the fastest man in the Stobart Super League.

As a winner of the Manchester award, Barrie then went forward to represent the city the Greater Manchester Sports Awards, and his achievement was recognised by the Manchester United Foundation, who presented Barrie with a special award as well as tickets to a Premiership game at Old Trafford.

It's great to see Barrie finally getting the recognition he deserves - a true Bedian legend I'm sure you'll agree!

UPDATE: you can see pictures from the Greater Manchester Sports Awards, including one of Barrie on stage with Olympian Lutalo Mohammed on the Greater Manchester Sports Partnership website
