A look ahead at Old Bedians 2nd XV's 2018-19 season

Confidence will be high for Old Bedians 2nd XV as they begin the campaign for promotion in NOWIRUL Sale Sharks Division 3 South. The last few years has seen the Didsbury side flying high at top of the leagues, crowned champions of Division 4 South in 2016/17 and last season only missing out on a successive promotion on head to head results.

With Mike Gallagher installed as Head Coach, a strong summer of recruitment and a gruelling pre-season well underway the squad is in prime position to re-launch its push for promotion this season.

Old Bedians 2nd XV opening fixture is at home to Capenhurst 1, the two teams haven’t met since February 2016 in a cup Quarter Final. The men from Didsbury lost that day and Capenhurst went on to win the cup. A lot has changed since then, the following season Old Bedians went on a unbeaten run, not losing a home league game for over a full season, winning the league and finishing joint second in the following campaign.

There are some interesting lineups in Division 3 South this season. Glossop third team enter the league having achieved promotion in Division 4 East, with the fixture on 15th September serving as a double header with it being the first round of the Robinsons Brewery Bowl.

There will also be testing fixtures against last season’s promotion contenders Carrington 1 (away on 27 October) and Manchester 2 (home on 1 December).
With a raft of new teams entering the division this year, some returning faces in the form of Knutsford 1 (away on 17 November) and Lymm 4 (away on 8 December), every game will present a new challenge.
Old Bedians face somewhat unknown opponents in the form of new league entrants Sefton 2s (away on 22 September), Prenton 2s (at home on 24 November) & Moore 1 (home on 20 October).

Two dates that will be firmly etched into the diary are 3 November and 2 March as these present the home and away fixtures to local rivals Toc H. Last season Old Bedians took the spoils on both Didsbury derbies with the two wins accumulating to 96 points to 15, whatever happens this year, sparks are guaranteed to fly!

Pre-season is well underway, taking place every Saturday morning and Old Bedians is recruiting now for the season ahead. All player new or returning are welcome, get in touch by emailing oldbedians@gmail.com or finding us on social media - we’re on Twitter and Facebook.
