Toc H 4th XV vs. Old Bedians 3rd XV 23/09/2017
Hard fought Battle of Didsbury ending with a win for the Bedes!
Any game between Old Bedians and our local rivals, Toc H are always a fiery affair but played in the best of spirits. Every player on both teams was up for a war. Local rivalries bring out the best in both teams and bragging are always at stake. The game was played at Toc H and last season Bedes defeated our rivals on their own ground which only added to the build-up of the game and knew that Toc H would not want a repeat of this. The weather and pitch conditions were ideal for flowing rugby, over cast but with just the right amount of moisture in the ground to cushion the heavy blows but allowing for fast backs to do their jobs well.
Old Bedians fielded a strong 3rd XV team, with a wide range of mixed abilities but who were all fired up for the fixture. The Bedes attacked hard from kick off, and our pack managed a try early on which settled them down. Our forward pack fought hard, as did our back line, of which were fielding several new faces. Toc H really fought hard too. Their forwards included several of their biggest men from the whole club and they put in some very heavy hits. Toc H scored two unconverted tries in the first half, with the Bedes scoring three with one conversion. We ended the first half in the lead but we felt we could have brought the fight to Toc H even more at half time. Many positives were taken from the first half but we felt we needed to up the gear going into the second. Halftime score Toc H 10 – 18 Old Bedians.
The second half started solidly for the Bedes. The backs upped the tempo with some great exchanges, however the forwards improved also; every man put in some great tackles which lead to two further Bedians tries, one of which was converted. Every man supported each other and put in a shift. Bedes took some massive hits from Toc H in the dying minutes as they threw all their experience at their opposition but the Bedes’ defence held well and closed ranks. Bedes managed one further try near the end of the game, meaning they had won the bragging rights again until their next encounter in early December at home. Final score Toc H 10 – 36 old Bedians.
