A look ahead at the opening fixtures

After what feels like a lifetime of Saturday trips to Ikea, Old Bedians are finally back in action with the start of the 2018/19 season.
This Saturday sees two teams in action, the 1st XV are away to Ruskin Park, the 2nd XV are at home to Capenhursrt 1s.

Let’s take a closer look at our opponents:

Ruskin Park
Old Bedians meet Ruskin Park in the first game of the RFU Lancashire/Cheshire 3 league. Ruskin Park will be somewhat of an unknown with the two clubs not having faced each other in recent years, one thing that can be guaranteed is that it will be a tough opener in Merseyside. The St Helens club finished fourth in the RFU South Lancashire/Cheshire Division 2 in 2017 before moving across to North West intermediate leagues winning the shield last season beating Liverpool St Helens 3rd XV.
The game will be Ben Rogerson’s first official outing as club captain, he will be buoyed by the solid performance in the club’s pre-season win against Newton-le-Willows.

1s kick off Saturday 1st September at 3pm at the Ruskin Park Sports Ground, WA10 6RP.

Capenhurst 1s
The last time the two teams met was in February 2016 when Capenhurst knocked Bedians second fifteen out of a cup quarter-final, Capenhurst were victorious that year and went on to win Division 4 West of the North West Intermediate leagues.
A lot has changed since then, the following season Old Bedians went on a unbeaten run, not losing a home league game for over a full season, winning the league and finishing joint second in the following campaign.

Given the performances of both teams in recent years, it promises to be a mouth watering opening fixture. Capenhurst play an expansive style of rugby with fast ball retention and Old Bedians defence will face a hard test from the Chester men.

Kick off is at 3pm at home on Saturday 1st September.

Old Bedians are still recruiting for the upcoming season. All player new or returning are welcome, get in touch by emailing oldbedians@gmail.com or finding us on social media - we’re on Twitter and Facebook.
