Match previews for Saturday 8th September

This Saturday all three teams are in action for the first time, the 1st XV face Ellesmere Port at home, the 2nd XV make the trip to Sale to face Village Spartans and the 3rd XV face Marple 3s at home.

Let’s take a closer look at our opponents:

Ellesmere Port
Saturday will be ‘The Oilers” first game this season, having had a gap week in the opening round of fixtures. The two teams last faced each other in February 2018 where Ellesmere Port ran out 39-14 winners at home.
The 1st XV, captained by Ben Rogerson, go into the game with one win under their belt having ran out 36-30 winners away to Ruskin Park last week. Ellesmere Port will be another formidable opponent; the Merseyside team have a big pack and a strong running backline available at their disposal.
Rogerson will be determined to make it two in two in front of the home crowd at Millgate Lane.

Kick off is at 3pm at Millgate Lane, M20 5QX

Village Spartans 1s
The second team will make the short trip to Sale to face Village Spartans 1s.
The two clubs met last season with Didsbury’s men running out winners on both occasions. Spartans had a tough start to the season having been beaten 54-0 by Knutsford 1s in the opening fixture. However, Old Bedians will be wary that they need to be at their best to get a result in Sale. Spartans are a well drilled, closely knit side with a strong defence.
To understand more about the club you can watch a mini documentary commissioned by the RFU in the run up to the 2015 World Cup, featuring a friendly against Old Bedians nonetheless!

Kick off is at 3pm at Sale Sports Club, M33 2DE

Marple 3s
Marple and Bedes third team faced each other three times last year, it ended 2-1 to Bedians with two narrow wins to Marple’s 24-10 win at Millgate Lane in February. Led out by Ben Steers, the third team has welcomed a raft of new players into the side following a positive summer of recruitment. With a number of players due to make their debut it is clear from training that the 3s have youth and pace on their side. In Marple, they face an experienced side who will look to dominate in set pieces and play a possession game.

Kick off is at 3pm at Millgate Lane, M20 5QX.

Old Bedians are still recruiting for the upcoming season. All players new or returning are welcome, get in touch by emailing oldbedians@gmail.com or finding us on social media - we’re on Twitter and Facebook
