Old Bedians travelled to Hutton (via Preston for certain squad members) looking to give a better account of themselves after the 64-0 reverse suffered at the hands of the Lancastrians two weeks earlier. It was clear from the start that Bedians had learnt lessons from the match at Millgate Lane as they didn't let Hutton settle into their effective (but tedious) rolling maul game plan. As well as fustrating Hutton with superb tackling, Bedians also looked threatening with the ball in hand, the returning Rob Renshaw, centre Vince Betty and Mike Roberts all breaking the gain line with a combination of strength and guile. Fourth place Hutton were the better team, their bigger, mobile pack proved hard to contain and this in the end allowed them to score two tries in quick succession just before the interval, both of which were converted, Half-time 14-0.
Bedes started the second half well, stand-off Mike Gallagher kicking them into good positions and this resulted into a penalty in front of the home side's posts, this was converted into points by Gallagher, 14-3. Hutton then piled on the pressure but on the whole Bedes fought fire with fire, Hetherington, Tamagna and Bannell to the fore with some excellent defence. Again Hutton's stronger pack bore fruit in the end and their strong pack allowed their backs the chance to score two long range efforts, one of which was converted to give a full-time score of 26-3.
A much improved performance from Bedes will fill them with confidence ahead of next week's visit of Birchfield and if I was a betting man I'd say they would win that fixture 25-21.
