Garstang 1st XV proved too strong for Old Bedians in the league opener for the 2023-2024 campaign.
Following a win in the cup against Burnley a couple of weeks prior, Old Bedians turned up to Garstang with high hopes of getting the league campaign off to a winning start. From the offset however, the home team’s attack very quickly took advantage of a number of mistakes made by Old Bedians defence throughout the first half, and opened up a sizeable lead. Going in to half time, Garstang lead the game 41-5, with the sole scorer for Old Bedians being Ed Henderson with an excellent dive for the line from 5 meters out.
Old Bedians made a much bigger impact in the 2nd half, sustaining a much more intense and structured approach to their attack following half time. This prolonged attack lead to Charlie crossing the line to claim his first try in an Old Bedians shirt. Our final try of the afternoon came from Brian Mok, who managed to weave his way through the Garstang defence to score.
Whilst it was certainly a disappointing result to start the league season with, there are some positives that we can take from the game. The effort portrayed in attack during the second half was something to be admired. Bedes can certainly build on this in the coming weeks.
1st XV captain Pat Willis had the following to say about the performance:
“despite it being a disappointing result and performance, I’m pleased with the effort and the heart shown until the end of the game. We have plenty that we can build on from here”.
The 1st XV’s next run out is against Thornton Cleveleys at home this coming Saturday.
