Old Bedians lost a dull affair against a Birchfield side who always prove to be tough opposition. Straight from the kick-off Birchfield were awarded a dubious penalty after the Bedians catcher was adjudged to have been shepherded by a team mate. This penalty was converted, 3-0. The only highlights (or lowlights) for the next 70 minutes where a penalty attempt from Gaz Prytherch that didn’t even threaten to leave ground level, a surprisingly good right hook from Martin Coupe and his subsequent backwards scurry and tumble at the sight of retaliation from his much bigger opponent (this resulted in a yellow card for both ‘pugilists’) and the usual 10 minutes spent without hooker Steve Bannell on the pitch for basically being a horrible little man. Bedians’ defence was much improved from recent weeks and Birchfield never threatened to cross the away team’s try line. Unfortunately the same could be said for Bedians who lost too much ball in contact and whose line-outs once again struggled. A last minute drop goal from all of 50 yards from Birchfield’s full-back left the final score at 6-0 to the home side in what was a dour contest.
