Bedians lose to promotion rivals

Old Bedians 1st XV travelled to Eagle hoping to build on their previous season that had been one of their best in recent years. Unfortunately, they ended up being well beaten by an Eagle side that they had pushed close in both games last season.

A poor first half saw Bedians allow Eagle to cross the line several times with a solitary Rob Naughton penalty their only reply. It seemed as if the second half would be a repeat of the first with Eagle scoring an early try. But then Bedes managed to tighten the game up a little and secure some possession in the Eagle half. This led to tries for Alan Irwin, who had come off the bench, and for Ryan Keyes. However, further defensive lapses by Bedians allowed Eagle to rebuild extend their lead and end any hope of a comeback.

In what was a poor performance by Bedes they did at times show signs of developing some structured play. However, the final score line of 42-15 is a signal that Bedians will need to improve significantly if they hope to achieve anything in the league this season.

Finally, a big mention must go out to James Gaffney for making his league debut for Bedians and turning in a good performance with some strong running despite being played out of position.
