For the first game of the season Bedians 2s faced Capenhurst 1s, a team recently relegated from the league above. A frantic opening 20 minutes had everyone gasping for breath in the hot sun, Capenhurst had the first blood using strong forward runners to go 7-0 ahead. Despite the set back Bedians were feeling confident, defence by and large was good and we were confident that fixing our attack wouldn't take long. A slick backs move gave debutant Tom Coen the break through, assist provided by fly-half Tom Slinger the fullback ran through the Capenhurst defence without a hand touching him. On the turn of half time Tom Slinger got the try his play deserved touching down in the corner. So despite the tough opposition and persistent strong forward running by Capenhurst Bedians had turned the tables at half time and were going in 10-7 ahead.
The second half was tight, with few opportunities that were unfortunately halted by the Capenhurst defence. After multiple forward plays down the middle of the pitch Capenhurst gained a penalty in front of the posts, slotting it through to level the score at 10-10. Frustration rose in the opposition towards the 80th minute and they were beginning to tire. Bedes were unlucky not to gain a win, the whole team showed heart and dedication for the entire 80 minutes. Although it was not a win, all the boys should be proud as this is a solid performance to build on this season. Credit to Capenhurst for a tight game and we look forward to the return fixture.
