The start of the new season saw Bedians make the trip to Derbyshire to try and keep their unbeaten record against Buxton. With large margin wins last season Buxton were fired up and showed a strong desire to avenge the previous encounters.

As the whistle went the heavens opened for five minutes after which there was only sun and a light breeze. Buxton were aggressive from the start, with a well drilled pack getting over the gain line. Bedes tackles were strong and committed, but an after multiple phases were not enough to prevent Buxton touching down first claiming their first points of the game. Shortly afterwards Buxton's pressure paid off again, although their aggression then began to get the better of them as they then received a yellow card for repeated ruck infringements. Bedians were determined to make their mark and did so by taking the ball into the oppositions 22 allowing stand in fly-half Emmert Reidy to score his first try for Bedians. The battle was then tough and saw Bedians once again take the ball to Buxton’s 5m line but the forwards were unfortunately held up, which concluded the half 12-5.

In the second half it was clear that Bedes' cobwebs were dusted as they looked more composed in the loose and lineout especially, forming several driving mauls that Buxton couldn’t halt effectively. The first points in the second half were in favour of bedes with a penalty just outside the 22 in front of the posts which stand-off Reidy slotted over with ease. But it was Buxton who found their way over the try line first with the ball being held tight by the forwards before being shipped out wide to the winger who took advantage of the overlap. Having been roused by Buxton's two tries and aggression, Bedes spirit came to the fore, and showed some committed defending, which was to cost them a couple of key players to injury, including flanker James Hennigan who had made a nuisance of himself at the breakdown all afternoon. Buxton responded with yet more aggression, which was to their disadvantage, with more infringements seeing another man sent to the sinbin - though it could have been more.

The final passage of play saw Bedians camped out on the Buxton 5m with both Emmert Reidy and Lloyd Cawthorne being held up before finally captin Paul Makinen dived over the line allowing Bedes to take some pride away from the match, making the final score 24-13 to Buxton.

Bedes will take alot of lessons from this match ahead of the new season, everyone felt we could have come away with a victory but it was not until late in the game we started playing at the right intensity. We look forward to hosting Buxton in the reverse of this fixture where another tight battle will no doubt take place.
